Materialised Identities: Cultural Identity, Collective Memory, and Artifacts

This essay outlines one way to conceptualise the relation between cultural identity, collective memory, and artifacts. It starts by characterising notion of identity as our membership groups briefly explores narrative (section 2). Next, it presents how human memory is conceptualised on an individual level 3) then distinguishes small-scale large-scale 4). Having described argues that materialised in environment when we retrieve construct memories integrating information from biological with artifacts or other people’s embodied brains 5). ends analysing identities are constructed using a niche construction approach evolutionary biology 6).
